Finding a New Life at the Charis House

On October 17, we celebrated the graduation of 3 ladies from Phase I of the Charis House program. Here is a glimpse at their stories. *Names have been changed to help provide a fresh start.

“My name is Bethany*. I was a drug addict for part of my life, and I was very broken and very lonely. I was left beaten, and broken and very alone. The day that I got arrested, I fell to my knees and asked Christ to come into my heart and save me from the way that I was living. Now, Christ has restored so many of my relationships between me and my family, and has brought me and my daughter closer together.”

“My name is Julie*. I’m 30 years old, and I’m a heroin addict. Over the last 14 years, I’ve struggled with that. I was incarcerated. For most of my adult life, I’ve been in and out of jail. I lost my father at a young age from a drug overdose as well. When I finally got arrested, I just said, ‘God, I’m tired. I’m exhausted of this life. Please help me. I cannot do it on my own anymore.’ I just cried out to Him, and asked Him to please save me and come into my heart. After that, I was sent to the Charis House. The Charis House changed my life and saved my life. It is the best program and decision that I’ve ever made in my entire life. I give thanks to everyone there that has supported me, and to my family, because I couldn’t have done it without them.”

“My name is Amy*. I’m 44 years old. I was a lost, hopeless, alcoholic and drug addict for many, many years until one day, God took me by the hand and said, ‘Let me lead you from the dark to the light’. April 15, 2020, I came into the Charis House. I was ready to surrender all, and that’s what I did. The Charis House has taught me many things, not only structure, and the Word – but it has gotten me closer to God than I could have ever imagined. One thing about addiction is that it doesn’t discriminate. It comes in all ages, shapes, sizes, and colors. Whatever you need, God has His arms open to you. I thank God for this miracle in my life. I want to thank the Charis House. I want to thank God above. I want to thank my family who have supported me through all this. I was once lost, but now I’m found – was blind, but now I see.”

All 3 ladies are moving into Phase 2 of the Charis House program, which is described as the “growing” phase of the program. They will enjoy a bit more freedom, and begin working and attending college classes, taking steps toward the futures many of them thought were impossible.

If you’d like to donate to the cost of a woman’s recovery through the Charis House, you can do that too! The cost to house and care for one woman for one year at the Charis House is more than $15,000; however, no one is turned away for inability to pay. Every dollar makes a difference in changing a life. If you wish to donate to the Charis House program, here are some ways you could help. (All costs are approximate guidelines.)

  • $30 helps provide transportation to residents for one month.
  • $100 provides one month of food for a client.
  • $200 provides books for a resident’s classes for one year.
  • $1,200 provides one month of room and board.
  • $2,000 provides one year of licensed professional counseling in which all clients participate.

The Charis House is a non-profit Christian-based residential substance abuse recovery program for females. The program is designed in 3 phases, each offering stages of recovery that provide the necessary tools for a practical transition into a new lifestyle free of addiction. The faith-based recovery program addresses the client’s personal relationship with God as the foundation for healing and wholeness. It requires a willingness to change and adhere to a controlled, strict and disciplined environment, allowing life-changing experiences to occur. There is no fee to apply.  To learn more about the Charis House, click here or contact Vanessa Bettis at 850-475-1116 or VBettis@MinistryVillage.org.
