Blessing Others During Christmas

Since Christmas 2008, the Tender Hearts Caring Hands program of Ministry Village at Olive has worked with area public schools to locate families who need some extra care and blessings during the Christmas season. In 2019, 3 families from each elementary school near the 2 Olive church campuses — Ferry Pass, Montclair, Navy Point, Bellview, and Warrington — as well as 3 families from the town of Century, were paired with donors who worked with Tender Hearts to provide gifts for Christmas.

“We got a late start on pairing donors this year,” said Kathleen Schuster, Program Manager for Tender Hearts Caring Hands. “Usually, we send out a list of available families for adoption to the Connection Groups at Olive Baptist Church early in the season; but this year, it was much later than usual and I was worried we wouldn’t be able to find matches for everyone. I worried and prayed, and as always, God answered.”

One big way God answered Kathie’s prayer this year was through a phone call from TEL Employee Leasing. “TEL called and said they wanted to provide gifts for several families this year – and with their participation, all of the names on our list found a match!” When asked how TEL knew to call Tender Hearts, Kathie said, “I’m not sure. I really don’t know. It was totally a God thing.” Through the generosity of this year’s donors, Tender Hearts Caring Hands was able to provide gifts for 18 families, including 64 children, this year.

Gifts are only one part of the holiday season. The special dinners that so many of us take for granted are out of reach for many families who struggle for food on a daily basis. To make the holidays feel a little more special for those families, Tender Hearts works with donors who want to provide holiday meals for families in need. For the 2019 season, Five Flags Sertoma provided Thanksgiving dinner baskets, complete with a turkey and all the fixings, for 20 families; and Lowe’s on Airport Boulevard provided Christmas dinners, including turkey and side dishes, for 24 families.

Thank you to TEL Employee Leasing, Five Flags Sertoma, Lowe’s Home Improvement on Airport Boulevard and all of the generous donors who donated, shopped, wrapped gifts and cared for these families. YOU are what makes the Tender Hearts Caring Hands ministry come alive to those who need us in our community!
