Taking Time for Renewal
Each year, toward the middle of August, the women of the Charis House look forward to their annual retreat. A caring and considerate couple, supporters of the Charis House ministry who wish to remain anonymous, selflessly donate their beachside condo each year for the Charis House ladies to enjoy. It is a time of relaxation, reflection and renewal that is deeply appreciated and very much enjoyed.
This year’s retreat highlights included taking a dolphin cruise, enjoying dinner one night at the Sunliner Diner (a 50s diner with ginormous burgers), as well as catching rolls and a fantastic meal one evening at Lamberts Café. They also enjoyed a Trail Mix Party at the condo. With the kitchen counter full of 20 different items from which to choose, each lady could create her own bag of customized trail mix to enjoy. Morning and evening devotions were led by the Charis House ladies each day, and they enjoyed prayer and worship time together as they shared how God was radically changing their lives. This year, the group also took a walk on the beach, and each one chose an item from their walk to bring back as a reminder of their time together.
Ms. Debbe Jefcoat, Director of Ladies Recovery Ministries for Ministry Village at Olive, says that the Charis House retreat provides the women and the Charis House staff a time to share and learn from each other on a relaxed and intimate level. “The day to day living at the Charis House is busy, and it’s a lot of work. Volunteering, doing the house chores, keeping up with their class work – they don’t have much downtime, and that’s by design. We want to keep them focused on why they are at the Charis House, and how to make the changes necessary to stop the destructive behaviors that were devastating their lives. But everyone needs some time to be refreshed, and this annual retreat has become such a blessing to all of us. We all enjoy the time together so much.”
